American Public University System names finance, program development experts to board

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va., May 24, 2005 — American Public University System, a distance learning institution based here, has named Lucie Lapovsky and Katy Marre to its board.

“Drs. Lapovsky and Marre bring an impressive background in education leadership, finance and more,” says Wally Boston, president and chief executive officer for the University System, which serves more than 12,000 online learners worldwide (www.apus.edu). “We look forward to their ideas and contributions to help continue our growth.”

Lapovsky has nearly 30 years’ experience in higher education and finance. As president of Mercy College, she helped double its graduation rate and the number of degrees awarded. She also led a successful capital campaign. She remains on the faculty at Mercy College and is writing and consulting on higher education. Lapovsky also served as vice president of finance at Goucher College, as the finance and facilities director for the Maryland Higher Education Commission, and as a fiscal planner for the state of Maryland. She is the editor of one book and the author of more than 100 articles. She serves on the research advisory committee for the American Council on Education, the Committee of Visitors at Goucher College and on the boards of Western New England College, Tuition Exchange, Packer Collegiate Institute, the White House Project and the National Council of Research on Women. Lapovsky earned her doctorate in economics from the University of Maryland at College Park.

Marre is a professor of English and former associate vice president for graduate studies and research at the University of Dayton. She has more than 20 years’ experience in accreditation and in graduate program development. Marre previously served as chair of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association's Institutional Actions Council. She is a consultant-evaluator for the HLC, supporting more than 40 accreditation visits and chairing many of these. She served as a board member for the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools and the Institute for Clinical Social Work. She chaired the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools in 1999-2000. Marre represented the University of Dayton for 21 years on the Ohio Board of Regents Advisory Committee for Graduate Study. She earned her doctorate in 1967 from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
