APUS Student Learning Outcomes Initiative Goals and Objectives

Objectives

Rationale

Action Plan

Who will be involved?

How will you know the objective has been met?

Objective #1

Revise institutional learning outcomes

Our mission document has just been revised, so we need to revise the institutional learning outcomes

Two key factors are important: 1) stakeholder involvement, and

2) clear,  measurable outcomes to ensure that tools can be defined to assess the  outcomes

Survey faculty and department chairs on institutional objectives – 4/29

Discuss  institutional objectives among department chairs/JF/PM at meeting – 5/2

Continue to gather input from full and part time faculty through email – 5/10

Present to extended staff – 5/16

Finalize institutional objectives

Department chairs

Full and part time faculty

Senior staff

All staff

Final set of institutional objectives will be developed

Objective #2

Heighten awareness and knowledge of institutional student learning outcomes among students, full and part time faculty and staff

All faculty, staff, and students  should have knowledge of what our graduates should be able to do when they graduate from APUS

Present institutional objectives in next all staff meeting

Email all staff

Publish in faculty, staff and student newsletters

Update website

Students

Full and part time faculty

Staff

All faculty and staff should be able to identify the 4 or 5 objectives we want our students to be able to know or do by the time they graduate from APUS

Objective #3

Refine/revise degree program level outcomes to ensure they are aligned with new mission document and institutional objectives

Our degree program level outcomes must contribute to both our institutional objectives and mission document

Work with 5 volunteer  department chairs to refine/ revise their degree program level outcomes – 6/15

Map institutional outcomes to courses

Department chairs

Faculty

5 degree programs will have a set of learning outcomes that accurately describes what their graduates should be able to know/do upon completion of the degree program

Objective #4

Refine/revise course student learning outcomes to ensure they are aligned with degree program learning outcomes

Our course student learning outcomes must contribute to fulfillment of our program level outcomes

Work with 15 volunteer faculty to revise their course student learning outcomes (3 faculty members per department chair)  – faculty will map their course outcomes to degree program outcomes – 7/1

Develop tools for faculty to map their course level outcomes with program level outcomes – faculty training module

Work with faculty to include degree program outcomes in student course guides – develop guidelines and procedures for this process

Faculty

Students

Approximately 150 courses will include student learning outcome that accurately describes what their students should be able to know/do upon completion of the course

Objective #5

Measure alignment of the institutional, degree program, and course student learning outcomes

All of our student learning outcomes should be aligned to ensure APUS is teaching what we purport to teach (and we know what our students are learning).

Gather input from students using Websurveyor to determine if the course, program, and institutional level outcomes have been met

Faculty

Students

Administrative support

Survey data will yield whether our course learning outcomes are being taught in the classes

Pilot project is now complete and ready to implement on a full scale while moving onto phase II – 7/15
