Department of Homeland Security

It is the student's responsibility to alert APUS that s/he may fall under a current Internal Recommendation Policy by emailing his/her Student ID and the name of the Internal Recommendation to articulations@apus.edu.

Eligibility:

Undergraduate students must be pursuing the following program at the University (maximum semester hours of transfer credit from this internal policy):

  • Any Undergraduate level degree program (15 SH)

Students may maximize transfer credit from this internal policy by pursuing the following programs:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice (General concentration ONLY)
  • Bachelor of Arts in Emergency and Disaster Management
  • Bachelor of Arts in Homeland Security
  • Bachelor of Science in Public Health

Guidelines:

  • A student has met the terms of the agreement and is eligible for possible Transfer Credit Evaluation (TCE) review if they completed the specific course(s) through one of the Department of Homeland Security's pre-approved training providers, identified in the table below, and they have not yet had an initial TCE completed.
  • If an initial evaluation has already been prepared and the student completed the specific
course(s) through one of the Department of Homeland Security's pre-approved training providers after the initial TCE was completed, they can send in the updated paperwork.  A TCE Update Request Form must also be submitted to initiate the review process.
  • If a student changes their degree program, they are eligible for a review of their certificate(s) for possible transfer credit.
  • If a student has already had an initial TCE completed, their documentation has already been reviewed, and no additional paperwork is to be submitted, they are NOT eligible for the agreement terms.

Students must send in a copy of their certificate(s) from one of the Department of Homeland Security's pre-approved training providers, identified in the table below, along with a TCE Application.  Course titles listed on the submitted certificate(s) must exactly match the course title listed in the table below to be eligible for transfer credit.  Transfer credit may be applied as follows, depending on the student's specific degree program requirements:

Determining the number of transfer credits:

  • Each pre-approved Department of Homeland Security course has an associated number of contact hours and/or continuing education units (CEUs) which will be mathematically converted to semester hours (SH) before being applied as transfer credit toward an APUS degree program.

  • Approved certificates will be categorized into either lower level (LL) course work or upper level (UL) course work and grouped together accordingly.  APUS will calculate the number of possible SH of transfer credit for LL courses and UL courses separately, as their credit award application is different.

  • To convert the contact hours/CEUs to SH, the contact hours will first be converted to CEUs using the equation: Contact Hours/10 = CEUs.  The CEUs will then be converted to SH using the equation: CEUs/1.5 = SH.

Award of transfer credit:

  • Lower level courses:  The number of calculated LL SH may be awarded toward the Elective requirements of a student's APUS degree program as applicable.

  • Upper level courses:

    • If the number of calculated UL SH exceeds 2 SH, the student is eligible to have omnibus credit applied toward the Major requirements of their degree program, however ONLY if they are pursuing one of the Bachelor's degree programs listed above for maximizing transfer credit under the terms of this agreement.  (Omnibus credit is upper level transfer credit which applies to a student's specific area of study within their Major requirements, but for which APUS does not offer an equivalent course.)  Students may receive a MAXIMUM of 6 SH of omnibus credit toward the Major requirements of their degree program.

    • The number of calculated UL SH not applied as omnibus credit, or all UL SH calculated for students not enrolled in one of the indicated degree programs, may be awarded toward the Elective requirements of a student's APUS degree program as applicable.

  • Total transfer credit award:  From all approved Department of Homeland Security certificates submitted, a MAXIMUM of 15 SH transfer credit, from both LL and UL combined, may be awarded toward a student's APUS degree program requirements.
