What is the Learning Outcomes Assessment?
The Learning Outcomes Assessment (LOA) involves two tests depending on a student’s program level and field of study. The Measure of Academic Proficiency & Progress (MAPP) and the Major Field Test (MFT) make up the Learning Outcomes Assessment.
Who is required to complete the LOA test?
Undergraduate students are required to complete the Measure of Academic Proficiency & Progress test. Undergraduate students in the following majors are also required to complete a Major Field Test (MFT) in their area of study: Business Administration, Criminal Justice, History, English, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. Graduate students seeking the Master of Business Administration degree must complete the Major Field Test in their subject area.
What subject matter is covered in these tests?
The MAPP test is an assessment of general academic knowledge and skills. The MFT is subject-specific and tests the basic knowledge and understanding of the core curriculum in your specific discipline. The test assesses mastery of concepts and principles as well as knowledge expected by students at the conclusion of a major in a specific subject area.
What is the purpose of the LOA test?
The LOA test measures the outcomes of our students learning and compares us to the national average. We are able to improve our programs, curriculum and quality of education based on the results of the assessment.
How long are these tests?
The MAPP test is completed in one 40 minute session. The undergraduate Major Field Tests are completed in two 1-hour sessions to include a small 15 minute break between sessions. The MBA Major Field Test is completed in two 1.5 hour sessions to include a small 15 minute break between sessions.
When should I take these tests?
Upon completion of all general education requirements undergraduate students may complete the MAPP test. Once an undergraduate student submits their Graduation Application they are eligible to complete both the MAPP and MFT (if applicable).
Is there a fee for these tests?
There is no fee or cost for completing the LOA test. We will pay the cost for the testing materials.
How will I be notified of the test requirement?
You will be notified by email within a week of applying for graduation about the LOA test requirement. Students that complete their general education requirements can contact the testing office at testing@apus.edu to request the MAPP test.
Can I complete the LOA test online?
The MAPP test can be completed using a secure online test environment or a paper/pencil version that is mailed to your proctor. The MFT is a paper/pencil test that is mailed to your proctor (an online version is not currently available).
Is a proctor required?
Yes, a proctor is required for the LOA test. The proctor has the responsibility to ensure the security of the testing materials. The proctor must comply with the proctor instructions and testing procedures as outlined in the test packet. Your proctor must meet the requirements set forth by the testing department. For proctor qualifications please email testing@apus.edu.
What happens once I submit my proctor information?
Once proctor information is submitted the LOA Specialist will contact your proctor to confirm proctor eligibility. Upon proctor confirmation the test information will be prepared. For students required to complete the MAPP test, the URL and session number will be emailed to your proctor. On test day you will meet with your proctor and your proctor will log you into the testing environment using the information we provide them. APUS will automatically be notified once the test is complete. Students that are required to take the Major Field Test will have the paper/pencil testing information mailed to their proctor. On test day your proctor will read the instructions and issue the test. Upon completion, the test will be mailed to the APUS Testing Department. Students will be cleared from this requirement once the test is received.
How will I find out my test score?
Upon completion of the general education MAPP test, scores will be posted on the testing screen following the completion of the test. Upon completion of the MFT the test packet will be returned to the APUS Testing Department for processing. We will mail your completed answer sheet to the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Results should be available approximately 90 days after completion of the test. Please email testing@apus.edu to request your test results.
Will I receive a grade for this test?
Will this test affect my GPA? No, there is no grade or passing score. All results are confidential and the testing results are used only to inform the University System of performance in a given subject area. The results are not calculated into a student’s grade point average or considered a part of the student’s academic performance.
What happens if I do not complete the LOA test?
If you are an undergraduate or MBA student and you do not complete your required testing then you will not receive your diploma or official transcripts conferring your degree. Students must complete this requirement as part of their graduation audit.
Can I request a waiver for the LOA test?
Waivers are only granted for extreme circumstances. If you feel you have an extreme circumstance please email the testing office at testing@apus.edu. If deemed appropriate; your request will be forwarded to the Student Affairs Manager for approval/denial. Waivers must be approved by the Student Affairs Manager and must include proper documentation.
