Learning Outcomes Assessment Requirement

American Public University System requires select students to participate in our Learning Outcomes Assessment (LOA) process.  LOAs include the ETS Proficiency Profile (EPP – formerly known as the Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress, or MAPP) and the ETS Major Field Test (MFT) which are both assessments designed to measure student learning.  Our students' LOA results are confidential.  The results are not calculated into the student’s GPA or considered as part of the student’s academic degree program.  LOA results are used only to inform the University System of student performance in designated fields so that areas for improvement can be identified within specific APUS academic programs and/or courses.

Students who are required to participate in one or both of these assessments should plan to complete the LOA requirement prior to their intended conferral date.  If the LOA requirement has not been met by the conferral date APUS will not issue final transcripts or a diploma until the assessment has been completed.

ETS Proficiency Profile (EPP)

The ETS Proficiency Profile (EPP) assessment will be administered to a sample of all undergraduate students.  If you are selected to complete the EPP, the Assessment Office will contact you via email within a week of the day you submit your Graduation Application.  Those students selected to complete the EPP will not be required to complete an End of Program survey as part of their graduation process.

The EPP assesses general academic skills which includes materials typically covered in the “General Education” portion of an undergraduate degree program.

The EPP includes 36 multiple-choice questions and must be completed within 40 minutes. It must be proctored and taken without the aid of notes, books, or other references. The questions cover three broad academic areas: Reading/Critical Thinking, Writing, and Mathematics.  The student must designate a proctor to administer the assessment via the Educational Testing Services (ETS) website.  Information on proctor designation can be found here

All EPP results and data are considered confidential and student scores are not calculated into the student’s GPA or considered as part of the student’s academic degree program.  Colleges and universities analyze their students’ EPP results to identify areas where they can improve the quality of instruction and learning by making changes to the curriculum and/or general education requirements.

For more information on the EPP please visit the ETS website at ETS.org.

If you have any questions regarding the EPP assessment or LOA requirements in general, please contact LOA@apus.edu.

ETS Major Field Test (MFT)

The Major Field Test (MFT) is required for all students in the following programs of study:

  • Bachelor's in Criminal Justice
  • Bachelor's in English
  • Bachelor's in Political Science
  • Bachelor's in Psychology
  • Bachelor's in Sociology

The MFT is administered at the end of the program to assess the student’s mastery of concepts, principles, and knowledge within his/her “major field.”

The MFT contains two sections of multiple choice questions that must be completed without the use of books, calculators, or aids of any kind.  All students will have two hours (two 1-hour sessions) for completion. The student must designate a proctor to administer the assessment.  Information on proctor designation can be found here.

All MFT results and data are considered confidential and student scores are not calculated into the student’s GPA or considered part of the student’s academic degree program. Colleges and universities analyze their students’ MFT results to identify areas where changes might be needed to the specified programs of study.
