Frequently Asked Questions

Sakai 2.9 Questions

What are some of the improvements for Sakai 2.9?

• Sakai 2.9 provides an updated user interface design, including collapsible toolbar navigation with descriptive icons and direct navigation to a tool from the site navigation bar.
• The word editor (CKEditor) also offers speed improvements, automatic Word-format-stripping by default, and is compatible with most mobile devices.
• Announcements can now be manually reordered.
• Easier distinction between pending and published copies of assessments with new tabs view.
• Direct navigation to a tool from the site navigation bar for quicker access to specific Tools in the classroom.
• User-friendly rich-text editor which allows for easier copy/paste from Microsoft Word.

How does Sakai 2.9 work with mobile devices?

Mobile detection detects a mobile device and serves the “Mobile View” to the user with an option to switch to full view. Tablets are not considered mobile devices and default to regular view.

What is new in the Forums tool section?

• The forums section now features two new useful notifications for instructor use when setting up their courses. Instructors are warned if all of their forums are in draft, and they are also warned if they create a forum with no topic entries.
• A new setting labeled “Require users to post before reading” has also been added. This option requires a new conversation to be posted before they are able to respond to others on that topic. This can be useful for encouraging original work or other assignment scenarios.
• The word “thread’ has been replaced by the word “conversation,” so students will now be starting and responding to conversations instead of threads.
