Synopsis of Role:

The APUS School of Professional Studies offers 3 M.Ed. degrees leading to certification in the State of West Virginia, in K-12 school administration, guidance counseling, or teaching, as well as additional education degrees and courses at the master’s level.  Certification is not guaranteed through the degree programs, but APUS is committed to assisting students in any way possible.

Essential Functions:
  • Creates and publishes (on the APUS Website) the specific requirements for certification for each group:  administrators, counselors, and teachers
  • Works with students to establish a timeline and process for certification, beginning with the Praxis I test for teachers during the first course, and continuing with preparation for PRAXIS II after degree completion
  • Advises students in the identification and completion of any pre-requisite courses required to obtain certification
  • Advises students about the differences and outcomes of the various degree programs and concentrations
  • Schedules instructors as needed for multiple courses per month
  • Communicates with instructors regarding course schedules, materials, students, and other concerns
  • Provides ongoing guidance to support students throughout the process
  • Monitors progress and submits regular reports on students who have been certified in WV
Critical Skills and Job Complexity:
  • Demonstrated knowledge West Virginia certification requirements, including examinations, for all three areas.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of certifications and reciprocity agreements between WV and other states, including familiarity with NASDTEC
  • Proven ability to organize projects and provide leadership
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree – Master’s degree preferred - in Teaching, Administration, and/or School Counseling
  • Appropriate current certification in the State of West Virginia, or eligibility for WV certification based upon certification in another state
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a K-12 school situation in a certificated position, e.g., teacher, principal, or guidance counselor
  • Salary commensurate with experience. Re-location expenses not covered.
