Synopsis of Role:

This position is responsible for working within the Academic Services Department to coordinate faculty training and professional development activities; and oversee the functions of the faculty training and professional development team.  Responsibilities include:  management and maintenance of the training and certification program which prepares new APUS faculty members to teach online using the Educator learning management system; assessing the need for faculty professional development, identifying available opportunities from internal and external sources, and making appropriate opportunities available to full time and adjunct faculty members; and management of the faculty training and professional development budget and overseeing the efforts of those who may develop workshops or other professional development activities; ensures that appropriate resources are made available to support faculty training requirements identified by members of the academic leadership team, including the Vice President for Academic Services, the Academic Dean and the Provost. 

Essential Functions:
  • Oversees the operation of the faculty training and professional development team.
  • Ensures appropriate training and professional development opportunities are made available for full time and adjunct faculty.
  • Manages the faculty training and professional development budget.
  • Coordinates with outside resource providers and interacts with other academic institutions to ensure that APUS stays abreast of industry best practices in the area of faculty training/professional development.
  • Schedules faculty training/professional development workshops, monitors attendance and completion and ensures they run smoothly and effectively.
  • Pulls data and creates reports, metrics, graphs, etc., on a monthly basis to track attendance and support the professional development efforts of the academic leadership team.
  • Serves as a project manager as needed to accomplish other missions assigned by supervisor.
Critical Skills and Job Complexity:
  • Must be knowledgeable about higher education and online education in particular, as well as faculty training and professional development.
  • Must have the ability to manage a team of employees and accomplish missions with minimal guidance. 
  • Must have the ability to manage a budget.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers and office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Must have the ability to prepare accurate spreadsheets and graphs using basic numerical data.  
  • Must have a thorough understanding of APUS and its policies, procedures, organizational structure, and mission/vision.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Masters degree in a higher education discipline preferred; Bachelors degree required.
  • Minimum 2 years higher education experience, preferably in an online environment, preferred; experience with faculty training/professional development a plus.
  • Management experience desired.
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in office administration-type duties is desirable.
  • Experience with information technology preferred.
  • Knowledge of Blackboard, WebCT or similar Learning Management System desired.

  • Ability to interact personably with faculty members working remotely.
  • Ability to communicate exceptionally well orally and in writing.
  • Ability to think logically, solve problems, compare data and other materials, and make appropriate recommendations to supervisor.
  • Represent APUS in a professional manner while dealing with other academic institutions or resource providers.  Proven experience in conducting presentations at professional conferences.
