Faculty Employment - Computer Literacy

With the significance of the computer in distance learning, it is essential that online instructors possess elemental computer skills. The following computer literacy self-evaluation will assist you in assessing your proficiency in using a computer and in using the Internet.

Please Note: You must give a response to each statement before you will be able to access the faculty application form.

Computer tasks I can accomplish:
I can turn my computer on, off, and reboot.
I am comfortable using a mouse.
I can create a new word processing document.
I can copy and paste text.
I can open and save a document.
I can perform spell check.
I can copy and delete files.
I can rename files.
I can create additional folders on my computer.
I can organize my files.
I can use Track Changes.
I can find lost files on my computer.

Internet Skills I possess:
I can use a web browser.
I can use the "Refresh" button on my browser.
I can create and use bookmarks or favorites.
I can use a search engine to search the web.
I can download and install programs or plugins.
I can send and receive e-mail.
I can attach a file to an outgoing e-mail message.
I can download documents, images, or other files from the Internet.
I can upload files to the Internet.
I can take a screen shot of my computer screen and send it in an email.

Responding "YES" to the majority of these statements is a good indication that you possess the computer skills necessary for teaching online courses for APUS.

Responding "NO" to the majority of these statements is a good indication that you may not be prepared for online teaching. We would strongly recommend that you take a course in basic computer and Internet skills to help prepare you for teaching online.

Additional Points to Consider
In addition to being technically prepared for teaching in the online environment, you must posses the discipline and the commitment needed to be an effective e-learning instructor. Please read, reflect upon, and respond to the following statements to help you assess your readiness for teaching online.
Teaching styles and habits needed to teach online:
I can dedicate a minimum of 4 to 6 hours a week to participate in the online teaching process.
I am willing to log on and contribute to my online classroom discussions and interact with students online at least 5 times a week.
I am able to create schedules for myself and stick to them.
I am willing to be flexible in dealing with students’ needs (due dates, absences, make-up exams).
I am comfortable in communicating almost entirely online with students.

Training and commitment:
I am willing to complete a four-week, free online training program in preparation for teaching with APUS.
I am willing to spend time rethinking and, if necessary, redesigning my teaching materials to fit the needs of the online environment.
I am willing to invest time in professional development to continue learning new online teaching and/or technical skills in the future.
