Online Librarian

Synopsis of Role:

Provides general reference support to University faculty, students, and staff.

Essential Functions: 

• Advanced collection and electronic classroom development with an emphasis on Web resources.
• Works collaboratively with department chairs and their faculty in the development of course materials.
• Specialization in one or more of the library’s contracted database, e-book, or student tutorial programs.

Critical Skills and Job Complexity: 

• Professional library/archival skills with an emphasis on electronic formats.
• Ability to interact with students and faculty in a professional and timely manner through electronic media.
• Mastery of online searching in keeping with the products licensed by the Online Library.
• Familiarity with current online searching methods in a Web-based environment.
• Working knowledge of educational resources on the Web.
• Proactive, yet diplomatic support of the University’s programs.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Master's degree in Library and Information Science required and other advanced degrees encouraged.
• Academic or special library experience and background in one or more of the University’s program areas are preferred.
• Experience working in online information services desired.
• Familiarity with office automation packages and knowledge of Web software preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

• Availability for weekend duty and a flexible time schedule.
• Intended for telecommuting, but desk space is available in the Charles Town, WV facilities.
• Collegial team environment that stresses cooperative endeavors and encourages exploration.
• Requires a working telephone along with access to the Internet, which is sufficient to address the current campus teaching platform and Online Library site.
