American Public University System Announces Appointment of First Archivist
Newly-Created Position Coincides with 20th Anniversary of School Founding as American Military University
Charles Town, WV–Oct. 18, 2011 – American Public University System (APUS) today named Bradley Wiles as its first archivist. The new role coincides with the recent 20th anniversary of the school’s founding as American Military University (AMU) in 1991, and with the launch of its new APUS ePress digital publishing initiative announced earlier this year.
Wiles will manage the university’s growing archives of physical and electronic records dating back over the last two decades. In addition, there are plans to incorporate APUS-produced oral histories, scholarly publications, and colloquia as regular features of the university archives, according to Dr. Fred Stielow, APUS dean of libraries and course materials.
"Preserving collections that document our evolution and continuing student, faculty, and program growth are central to the archives’ mission,” said Stielow. “Brad gets to create virtual academic archives -- operations that both chronicle APUS's historical legacy and proactively build the community for an online university system of nearly 97,000 students in 120 different countries.”
Wiles comes to APUS from a similar role at Hill Memorial Special Collections Library at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge. Prior to LSU, he worked on a number of archival processing projects and digital initiatives at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin Historical Society, and the State of Wisconsin. His research interests include archives and records administration, cultural heritage preservation, information studies, digital humanities, and modern U.S. and European history. He holds a Master’s in History from Western Illinois University and a Master’s in Library and Information Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
