CIA Chief of Corporate Learning John Pereira to Present Keynotes at 2013 APUS Commencement

Charles Town, WV, May 1, 2013 –American Public University System (APUS), today announced that John E. Pereira, the Central Intelligence Agency’s Chief of Corporate Learning, will deliver keynote remarks at its 17th annual commencement, Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in National Harbor, MD. More than 8,200 students will be recognized with conferrals at separate graduate and undergraduate ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. EST and 2:30 p.m. EST, respectively.

Pereira was selected to serve as the Agency’s first Chief of Corporate Learning in January 2012.  His mandate is to help develop an organizational environment that connects learning with performance, challenges old assumptions, and increases the speed with which the agency applies and disseminates lessons learned. He draws on knowledge and practices from the intelligence community, academic institutions and industry.

“Commencement is a time to recognize our graduates for their accomplishments and to inspire them to excel in their chosen professions. We are fortunate to have a leader in the intelligence community and in learning, John Pereira, share his insights on the value of lifelong learning, adapting, and improving,” said APUS Executive Vice President & Provost Dr. Karan Powell.

Prior to his current role, Pereira served as the Director of the CIA’s Directorate of Support.  Over the course of his distinguished public service career, he has worked for both the CIA and the US Department of State, including numerous overseas assignments.

As Pereira notes, “The challenges we face today are more complex and less predictable than they have ever been.  The sum of what we know today simply will not be sufficient to solve tomorrow’s challenges.  For the public and private sectors alike, those who make learning a daily practice will have the clear advantage.”

Pereira received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from The George Washington University.  He is currently a member of Harvard University’s Learning Innovations Lab (LILA) and The Conference Board’s Executive Council on Talent and Organizational Development, and is an ex-officio member of the Board of Visitors for the National Intelligence University (NIU).
