APUS Names 2014 Finalists for APUS Innovation in Online Education Prize
Winner to be named in May as part of Fifth Annual Milken-Penn GSE Education Business Plan Competition
Charles Town, WV, April 17, 2014 – American Public University System (APUS) today announced six finalists for its annual Prize for Innovation in Online Education, part of the 2014 Milken-Penn GSE Education Business Plan Competition (EBPC). Now in its fifth year, EBPC is designed to stimulate cutting-edge ideas that serve the world’s educational needs, from Pre-K to adult learning. The APUS prize recognizes the best business plan leveraging online/distance learning within higher education.
The 2014 APUS prize finalists, selected through a crowd-sourced judging process and sponsor review, include the following:
- Open Assembly, New York City: a framework that empowers instructors and students to use open textbooks and open courseware (OCW) in new and innovative ways for hybrid and online learning.
- Osmosis, Philadelphia: a desktop and mobile application that extracts data from medical school curricula and uses a cluster algorithm to import and aggregate related articles, videos and other content.
- ProfessorWord, Philadelphia: integrates the vocabulary learning lifecycle into one seamless experience, offering an easier and more effective way to teach and learn vocabulary.
- Scholly, Philadelphia: uses adaptive search to target scholarships that are specific and relevant to the student using parameters like GPA, state or race.
- Totus Power, San Francisco: a battery pack that enables technology-based learning at low-cost schools in developing countries.
- UClass, San Francisco: a global lesson exchange that saves teachers time and effort in finding and creating high-quality Common Core aligned lessons.
APUS created the award in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE) to support the growth and success of e‐learning in higher education. Last year’s $25,000 award-winner was Persistence Plus, which leverages mobile technology and behavioral research to support college persistence, completion, and life success. All competition finalists will gather in Philadelphia on May 13-14 to vie for $140,000 in prize money and pitch their ventures to investors, researchers, entrepreneurs and practitioners, including Dr. Wallace E. Boston, APUS president & CEO.
