AMU Launches New Concentration in Government Security Management
Charles Town, WV, Feb. 13, 2013 –American Military University (AMU), part of American Public University System, has introduced a new government security concentration as part of its Bachelor of Arts program in security management. The concentration is designed specifically to meet the professional and educational needs of industrial security professionals.
The specialized focus was developed in consultation with NCMS, the Society for Industrial Security Professionals, with input by leaders in the government security industry to build an educational foundation for current and aspiring government security professionals.
“Our partnership with NCMS brings industry and scholarship together to help prepare the next generation of security professionals to anticipate change in an evolving field,” said Kristen Obst, Ph.D, AMU program director, public administration and security management.
Tony Ingenito, former NCMS president and sector security director for physical and industrial security at Northrup Grumman, noted, “Past generations entering the government security profession often did so with degrees that were not based on their actual job and required years of learning while on the job. AMU’s new government security curriculum will help prepare new security professionals to better understand their role and adapt more quickly to advance in their career.”
The private sector security industry helps safeguard Department of Defense and other government projects and programs. Education in critical infrastructure protection, industrial and economic espionage, personnel and physical security, and other related topics is therefore increasingly important for industry professionals, according to Jeffrey Hawkins, AMU manager of strategic initiatives, private security sector.
“Our new government security concentration is a great example of the partnerships that AMU has formed with security industry experts to develop the educational offerings they need to help address the risks of today, and the challenges of tomorrow,” said Hawkins.
The new concentration includes the following courses:
• Information Assurance
• Industrial Espionage
• Foundations of U.S. Government Security
• Protecting U.S. Government Facilities
• U.S. Government Personnel Security
