American Public University System Human Development and Family Studies Program Earns Reapproval by National Council on Family Relations; Introduces New Career-Relevant Course
Charles Town, W. Va., November 4, 2014 – American Public University System (APUS) today announced that its Human Development and Family Studies Program has been reapproved by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) following NCFR’s required five-year comprehensive review. APUS’ fully online program uses interactive multimedia, visual collages, and other innovative online teaching methods to prepare students for careers in community-based social-service agencies, early childhood education programs, hospitals and hospice organizations, and similar organizations.
NCFR recognizes regionally accredited schools offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs with coursework that covers the 10 family life education content areas required for approval as a provisional Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE). NCFR approval allows American Public University and American Military University graduates to apply for provisional certification using an abbreviated application process.
Courses in the program have recently been updated to include modern-day dilemmas such as school safety, downward social mobility due to economic hardship, and changing American demographics, according to Program Director for APUS’ Human Development and Family Studies, Dr. Nancy Heath, LMFT, CFLE.
“We work continuously to ensure that our programs are highly relevant for working professionals who want to gain the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their careers,” said Dean of the APUS School of Education, Dr. Conrad Lotze.
Beverly Greene received a 2014 Academic Scholar Award from APUS for her achievements while earning a bachelor’s in Child and Family Development. “The program offered what I wanted to learn to expand from teaching children to helping families,” Greene said. “It was structured so I could earn my degree while working full time.” A former Montessori classroom teacher, she now works as a school assistant director at Kincaid Montessori in Leesburg, Va.
Another new feature of the Human Development and Family Studies program is the course, “Child Life Theory and Practice,” required by the Child Life Council (CLC) to pursue certification as a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS). The child-life field focuses on training professionals to deal with children and their families undergoing crises, with special emphasis on medical issues.
