American Public University System Celebrates Largest-Ever Graduating Class at 19th Annual Commencement Ceremony

Charles Town, W.Va., June 17, 2015American Public University System (APUS) celebrated the achievements of its largest graduating class ever at its 19th annual commencement on June 13 at the Gaylord National Hotel in National Harbor, Md. Nearly 11,000 American Military University (AMU) and American Public University (APU) graduates were recognized.

The Class of 2015 featured more than 5,000 bachelor’s, 3,600 master’s, and 1,800 associate degree conferrals, expanding the APUS global alumni network to more than 50,000 worldwide. Graduates of APUS -- founded in 1991 as AMU to educate those who serve -- included more than 5,000 servicemembers. Overall, they hailed from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 38 countries across five continents, according to APUS President and CEO Dr. Wallace E. Boston.

“Just as APUS is unique, so are each of you, our graduates,” said Boston, who charged them to “Capitalize on these moments and continue your education to set yourself apart.”

Dr. Mark Milliron, co-founder and chief learning officer of Civitas Learning and graduate ceremony keynoter, commended the students as courageous learners, empowered by their success at APUS. “Each of you has the opportunity to use that courage and power to reach out and help another student through their educational journey by mentoring, encouraging, coaching, and acting as role models,” he said.

Admiral Michelle Howard, vice chief of naval operations and the first African-American woman to achieve three- and four-star rank in the U.S. Armed Forces, addressed the undergraduate ceremony. She praised the graduates for overcoming a variety of obstacles along their educational journey, including holding down a job, raising a family and living a life outside the APUS virtual campus. “As pioneers in a global, interconnected world, your possible destinations are limitless,” she said.

Additional highlights from this year’s ceremony included the following:

  • APU Public Health graduate Prasida Khanal received the President’s Award for outstanding academic achievements and for her international humanitarian work with the United Nations and her advocacy for gender equality, victims of sexual assault, and community health programs.
  • AMU Information Technology graduate William Cody Harris received the President’s Award for outstanding academic achievements and for his community contributions and for receiving numerous promotions and recognitions within the military.
  • Criminal Justice Faculty Director Mark Bond received APUS’s James P. Etter Award for Creativity and Innovation, created in honor of its founder and first chancellor.
  • Dr. Linda Moynihan, retiring dean of the School of Arts & Humanities, was named dean emeritus.
  • Twelve AMU and APU graduates received the Academic Scholars Award for their superior academic achievements in earning a degree from one of APUS’s six schools. Additional outstanding alumni were also recognized with Alumni Community Service, Alumni Education, Alumni University Service, and Distinguished Graduate Awards.
  • More than 14 student organizations met, and 180 alumni, faculty, and staff members packaged 17,000 meals for distribution to underprivileged communities worldwide through Stop Hunger Now.

More than 1,000 graduates attended the ceremonies, with thousands more and their families watching and joining the celebration via live webcast from around the world. The ceremonies can be viewed at http://www.apu.apus.edu/commencement/live.
