New Health Information Management Programs from American Public University System to Help Healthcare Professionals Harness Big Data to Improve Patient Outcomes

New MS in Nursing to also Prepare Practitioners to Meet Changing Healthcare Demands

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va., September 2, 2015American Public University System (APUS) today announced three new health science degree programs designed to provide adult learners with career-relevant skills to help them manage patient care and administration in a rapidly changing healthcare environment.

The Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (BS HIM) is designed to provide students with the operational knowledge and skills required to be a health information administrator in a variety of settings such as hospitals, insurance companies, and government agencies. The Master of Science in Health Information Management (MS HIM) program caters to individuals currently working in the industry or a related field seeking to build leadership skills, critical thinking, communications, and problem solving skills. Like the BS HIM, the multi-disciplinary curriculum focuses on healthcare data as the foundation for information and knowledge management systems, and emphasizes health data management, clinical and administrative decision-making, strategic planning, and outcomes management.

“The Bureau of Labor Statistics cites health information management as one of the nation’s fastest-growing occupations, increasing the demand for skilled professionals in data management, information policy, finance, information systems, and administrative and clinical environments,” said Barbara Netzer, associate vice president and assistant dean of APUS’s School of Health Sciences. “Our flexible course schedules, waived GRE requirement and affordable tuition make these new programs well-suited for working professionals seeking to advance or broaden their career.”

In addition, the APUS School of Health Sciences also launched a new Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) designed to prepare students to be effective leaders in the nursing profession and to be an agent of change in the delivery of healthcare.  Students will use evidence-based principles and theory to guide both their learning and professional practice. Students have the opportunity to select either nurse educator or nurse leader specialization tracks.

“The transformational changes occurring in healthcare today make advanced nursing practice and health information management essential to the provision of safe, patient-centered care,” added Netzer.  “Our new programs will help support the accomplishment of this national imperative.”

Enrollment for all three programs begins September 2, 2015, with the first MS HIM course available for registration after October 1, 2015. Until then, MS HIM applicants may register for other required courses in this program that are not HIM courses.
