American Public University System Appoints Robert Gay as Chief Operations Officer Enrollment Management Expert Brings Deep Business Expertise to New Role

Charles Town, WV – Nov. 14, 2016  American Public University System (APUS) today announced the appointment of Robert Gay as chief operations officer, effective December 12, 2016.  In his new role reporting to recently-appointed APUS President and former Provost Dr. Karan Powell, Gay will oversee all institutional marketing and enrollment management initiatives in alignment with the university’s core mission to provide affordable, accessible, quality academic programs to adult learners.

“I look forward to working closely with Bob and the senior university leadership team to further enhance and leverage our university’s established reputation for academic quality and outstanding learning outcomes,” said Dr. Powell.

Gay comes to APUS from Maguire Associates in Concord, Mass., a research-based consulting firm serving educational institutions, where he assisted in marketing, sales and other key areas like financial and client management as senior vice president. During his five-year tenure, his noteworthy accomplishments included end-to-end management of the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (ConnSCU) contract, in addition to initiating and guiding the firm’s relationship with Blackboard.

Gay brings a broad range of additional experience in both the public and private sectors, including as vice president of enrollment management at the New School, a private university in New York City, where he was responsible for admissions, marketing, operations, and student financial aid and registration. He previously served as executive vice president of operations and enrollment management at Cardean Learning Group, and as first vice president of enrollment management at the University of Maryland University College.

Prior to entering higher education, Gay spent 17 years in the communications industry, serving in various senior management positions with MCI, LCC International and Solectron Global Services. He holds two degrees from Towson University in economics and business administration.
