Student Responsibility

There are steps that you can take to ensure that your interactions with your advisor are relevant and productive.

Determine your needs:  What questions do you have? Review your Academic Plan and be prepared.

Know the policies:  Many questions are easily and quickly answered with a review of the Student Handbook and/or Academic Catalog. Check out the Tips & Tools page for tips on using these documents.

Formulate questions:  Take the time to formulate all your questions. We know how valuable your time is. Come to an advising session prepared with all of your questions so that we can provide answers or help you get in touch with the correct university representative.

Ensure clear communication:  We do not always have the opportunity for face to face communication. Discussions can be effective through email and phone.  Here are some tips:

  • Be Patient – connections are not always perfect. We will call you back if we lose you using the phone number on file in your academic records.
  • Be Clear – we know how valuable your time is. Come ready to discuss your issues; we will be ready to help!
  • Identify Yourself – know your student ID number so we can access your records.
  • Update Information – we will initiate communication using the email address, mailing address and phone numbers as listed in your student records.

Follow up:  It is the student’s responsibility to take ownership of their education; it is the advisor’s responsibility to ensure that, if you need it, you have someone to help you develop your academic direction and decisions. We are both responsible for fostering a productive and successful relationship through clear communication and expectations. If you ever have any questions about how we can help you, please let us know by contacting counseling@apus.edu.
