This course focuses upon the problems and challenges of managing individuals, groups, and organizations in a virtual or distributed environment. Virtual means that work is accomplished by interdependent people performing at different time or places, or across organizations. This course addresses current topics associated with the new forms of organizing that new technology and accompanying strategic changes promote. The student will examine online business models, sources of competitive advantage in e-commerce, and techniques for evaluating opportunities. In this context, the student will also discuss ways in which e-commerce organizations differ from conventional organizations and how to create e-commerce alliances. Issues include a focus on social interactions; the social, political, economic, and technological contexts of virtual communities and the limits for their sustenance.

The successful student will fulfill the following learning objectives:

  • Explain the concept of e-collaborations and virtual organizations
  • Examine the advantages and disadvantages of virtual organizational design
  • Explore and discuss the importance of the technology in business operation and functioning
  • Identify and describe resource sharing and distribution strategies
  • Identify and discuss the features of successful virtual organizations
  • Compare and Contrast the management of virtual vs traditional teams
  • Compare and Contrast the management of virtual vs traditional organizations
  • Identify and describe the role of virtualization in organizational change and transformation
  • Analyze the impact of culture on interpersonal communication and operation of virtual organizations
  • Identify and describe various communications and meeting tools used in the virtual organization
  • Identify and describe the use of groupware systems as communication platforms

Discussion Forum Participation Weeks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 (5 points each: 5 x 6 = 30 total points)

Discussion Forum Posts

Please join the discussion forum during the class session. Students must post a reply to the weekly discussion question and at least two additional postings. Replies must be posted in the week due and replies after the end of the each week will not be graded. The discussion forums are for student interaction and submitting input after the weekend serves no learning objectives. Students should demonstrate their own knowledge in the discussion forums and avoid copying and pasting from web sites.

Discussion postings should NOT be in the form of file attachments, but rather as text (supplemental content, such as visual accompaniements (e.g., graphs) can be attached as separate files. Your grade earned for the discussion forums will be based on your total engagement during the week. Please note that just replying does not guarantee full credit. You must provide meaningful input that will further the discussion topic. Please note that the discussion forum is an important part of your grade in this class.

There will be homework assignments almost every week during the course. Please review the weekly schedule posted below to ensure that you are submitting the assignments each week.

All assignments should be prepared in Microsoft Word and uploaded into the student folder by the due date (generally Sunday evening).
