This course covers the development of the drug cartels and their organization, production, and distribution networks. This course will focus on the regions known as the Golden Triangle and Golden Crescent, and the drugs that are typically manufactured and transported from these areas. This course also provides an overview of U.S. counter-drug efforts and basic information on illicit drugs. Additionally this course provides an historical overview of drug trafficking including a focus on the opium wars in China.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:
CO1: Trace the origin and history of opium throughout history
CO2: Examine the impact of the First Opium War and the role that England, France, and the United States played in the proliferation of opium in the Far East
CO3: Examine how world events led to the proliferation of opium around the globe
CO4: Trace the origin, history, and cultivation of the Coca Leaf
CO5: Examine how and why the Coca Leaf developed from a cultural product to an illicit drug
CO6: Examine and trace how the United States and other nations began the fight against organized crime, cartels, and narcotics’ kingpins
CO7: Examine the fight against violence and terror on the Southwest Border of the United States as a result of cartels and narcotics’ kingpins
CO8: Examine U.S. Drug Policy
CO9: Examine and understand how opium and the coca leaf became global commodities
CO10: Examine how geography and topography played significant roles in the proliferation of opium and the coca leaf on several continents
CO11: Examine and understand how narcotics has influenced the economy of the Far East, Middle East, South America, Central America, and North America
