EDMG509 - Interagency Disaster Management

This course deals with the interaction, coordination, and facilitation between federal, state, and local agencies during preparation, response, and recovery operations. The history of emergency response organizational development is explored, along with the current structural and operational design provided by the National Response Framework (NRF) and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). Finally, the potential for public-private partnerships in disaster response is examined. Students will achieve an understanding of how all of the various agencies work together to achieve emergency management and disaster response goals and objectives.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to
LO-1: Appraise theories of dealing with disaster preparedness.
LO-2: Discern between the four phases of emergency management and their proper uses.
LO-3: Analyze the different agencies and levels of disaster management in the US.
LO-4: Critique the processes that prevent or inhibit cooperation between agencies.
LO-5: Synthesize the knowledge acquired in this course to comprehend the integrated interagency disaster system.
LO-6: Evaluate the consequences of the lack of interagency cooperation on civil preparedness planning and response.
Discussions: To achieve full credit for a discussion, one must: create an original post; respond to a minimum of two classmates; respond to everyone who responded to you. Posts must be thoughtful and responses helpful in a way that enhances understanding of the topics and issues.
Weekly Papers: Papers will be graded using the APUS graduate rubric, with attention paid to comprehension, depth of knowledge, and clear expression of ideas and arguments. Additionally, adherence to APA conventions will be required.
