HIMA550 - Clinical Workflow and Process Redesign

This course addresses processes in the administration of health information management as they relate to performance, bottlenecks, delays, duplication of effort, and other issues in order to identify areas of improvement. Students will study process mapping and examine how auditing the information content can increase productivity via information technology and automation. Issues related to computerized provider order entries (CPOE) and electronic health records (EHR) will be analyzed associated with safety and quality. Students will examine the symbiotic nature of clinical workflow and process redesign.

Current Syllabi

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
1. Deconstruct the ways in which activities in a health care setting are carried out, by whom, and in what order.
2. Diagram the Institute of Medicine (IOM) six quality areas for health care.
3. Evaluate the use of electronic health records (EHR) and their ability to support physician entry and clinical decisions.
4. Generate process mapping using standards steps, sequences and symbols utilized by diagraming methods such as unified modeling language, E-R diagram, Gane-Sarson, Yourdon-code, and ISO 5807 flow charting.
5. Assess three optimizations methods.
6. Examine elements in health care decision making related to benefits, risks, and alternatives.

Forums
Please join the forums each week. Replies must be posted in the week due and replies after the end of each week will not be graded. The Forums are for student interaction and input should be submitted before the week ends in order to fully participate in the discussions. Students should demonstrate their own knowledge in the forums and avoid copying and pasting from websites. Please consult the Forum Grading Rubric for information on how your participation will be evaluated.

Guidelines:

• Post the initial response to each forum by 11:55pm, ET, Thursday.
• Initial responses should be no less than 300 words.
• Initial responses are to be original in content and demonstrate a thorough analysis of the topic.
• Reply to at least 2 of your classmates in each forum by 11:55pm, ET, Sunday.
• Replies to classmates should be no less than 200 words.
• Responses to classmates are significant to advance the forum.
• All forums can be accessed in the Forums section of the course.

Forum Grading Rubric

Topical Essays
For Weeks 1-6 you will have a Topical Essay of 1-2 pages to complete. Each essay is designed to explore a key topic(s) for that week, and will challenge you to apply critical thinking skills to the analysis of important issues relevant to the field of Health Information Technology. Each essay should follow APA format and the Citation and Reference Style guidance provided within this syllabus.

Term Project
This project is a living project that you will complete as individual milestones during Weeks 2-7. All of these steps will be compiled into two documents that you will submit at the end of Week 7. One document will be the completed templates PPT. The other document will be a Word document that is a compilation of your weekly narratives about completing the template for that week. Please visit the link below for complete instructions on how to complete the Term Project. Note that these are also provided within the Assignments area of the course. The PowerPoint templates referenced in the instructions are provided within the Assignments area of the course within the details Term Project Milestone 1.

Required Textbook for the degree program:

Candidates are expected to adhere to APA style throughout the program. The Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (Currently 6th ed.) should be purchased and used in all courses.
