This course familiarizes the student with the basic law, procedures and rules that govern the criminal justice system in America. It is designed to produce students who can understand, appreciate and discuss the benefits and problems with the criminal justice system in America today. The students will become conversant with the Bill of Rights, basic criminal law terminology and procedures. The course emphasizes the principles of criminal liability and the acts, mental state, and attendant circumstances that are necessary ingredients in crimes against persons or property or in offenses involving theft, fraud, drugs, morality and decency, public peace, or public justice.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate and explain the following learning objectives:
CO-1: Examine the purpose and scope of criminal law in America and its sources.
CO-2: Evaluate the impact of constitutional protections, including the Bill of Rights, on the United States criminal legal system.
CO-3: Explain the definition of a crime and the classifications of crimes.
CO-4: Compare and contrast Civil and Criminal Law.
CO-5: Specify the roles of the federal and state governments and court systems in the United States criminal system.
CO-6: Analyze the concepts of mens rea, actus reus and corpus delicti as applied to the elements of a crime.
CO-7: Critique the decisions of the United States Supreme Court in landmark criminal law cases.
CO-8: Explain the various criminal defenses in the United States criminal legal system.
CO-9: Analyze inchoate offenses and how one becomes a party to a crime.
CO-10: Discuss the nature, purpose and elements of crimes against property, persons, the public and the government.
The Course Outline of this syllabus details the required reading assignments for the various weeks of the course. Each week includes a required reading assignment found in the ebook for this course.
In addition to the required reading assignments, the student is also required to participate in the discussion forums. Please see the Forum section of the classroom for further details on the specific discussion forums and topics.
Questions and topics posed in the Forums are designed to promote thought and insight. Students must provide a critical review of the questions, topics and issues posed and substantively reply to the contributions of at least three peers. Individual postings should include a full discussion of the content of the question posed and explain how it relates to the concepts in the weekly text readings and other resources. The postings should be analytic in nature and include comparisons/contrasts, and examples that can bolster your point. The Forum is for your benefit and it is important to respond to the discussion topic and to engage others in a running dialogue.
Your initial post should be made by Wednesday this week. You should then respond to 3 or more posts. Note that at least one response to your classmates must be made before Sunday. If you make all of your responsive posts on Sunday, you will not earn full points for timeliness.
This can be accomplished by
· Validating with additional evidence from the literature.
· Posing a thoughtful question with commentary which generates further discussion.
· Providing an alternative point-of-view, with evidence and examples.
· Offering additional insight into how the concept might be understood, with evidence provided with real world examples.
You should be active in the classroom throughout the week and actively engaged in the back-and-forth discussion between your colleagues and the professor.
