MATH210 - Discrete Mathematics

This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of discrete mathematics. The course provides a foundation for the development of many computer related concepts and more advanced mathematical concepts found in electrical engineering or computer science courses. Important applications in the computer science and engineering disciplines will be presented. Topics include: fundamentals (basic tools for discrete math); logic; methods of proof; graphs and sets; functions; relations and equivalences; recursive relations; polynomial sequences; induction; combinatorics; counting; and probability. (Prerequisites: MATH110, MATH111, or MATH225)

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to

  • CO-1 Apply set theory to produce a Venn diagram to solve problems.
  • CO-2 Examine recursive and explicit formulas to prepare functions.
  • CO-3 Apply logic rules using truth tables to demonstrate equivalences and problem solving.
  • CO-4 Analyze statements using mathematical induction.
  • CO-5 Compute probabilities of events and conditional probabilities.
  • CO-6 Define for terms such as Hashing functions, fuzzy sets, and fuzzy logic.
  • CO-7 Demonstrate relations and diagraphs when presented with a problem.

Forum Assignments: The University requires weekly contact from each student. This requirement can be met by participating in the weekly Forums. A total of 16% of the final grade will be based on participation in the weekly Forums. Forum postings are expected to be written in complete sentences using correct grammar and spelling. Any posting which requires research must be accompanied by a citation of the references used. Forums are due Wednesday of each week. Comments to fellow students must be completed by Sunday of each week.

Homework: Homework problems are assigned for each section of the book that we study. The Homework can be found in the Lab by clicking on the left WebAssign Tab in the Classroom.

These homework problems count as 40% of your final grade and they are an important factor in your success at mastering the subject.

Quizzes: There will be three graded quizzes during the course. Each will be a 8-14 question with multiple parts online, open-book, open-note exam. You may not consult with any other person while taking the exam. A total of 24% of the final course grade comes from these quizzes. The questions are selected to provide the student with hands on experience in applying the techniques and processes discussed.

Final Exam: The final exam will count as 20% of the final grade. It will also be a 14-18 question with multiple parts online, open-book, open-note exam. You may not consult with any other person while taking the exam. The examination will be based on all material covered during the semester. The questions will require computations and application of the material covered during the semester. Students are encouraged to take the Practice Final in the WebAssign homework before taking the Final Exam.

Please coordinate with the professor for any special arrangements. Unless the professor approves alternate arrangements, students should plan to take the final examination during the last week of the course. You will not need a proctor to take this exam.

Additional Resources
Students will need a calculator (either a physical calculator or an online calculator) to successfully complete this course. The calculator should include a memory and square root function. At the student’s discretion, a scientific calculator capable of performing statistical functions or a computer spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel.
Excel may be used. Students may make use of the above for all graded assignments and exams during the course.
