This course is an introduction to Islam - and its associated civilization - through readings, case studies, projects, and interaction within the classroom. Course content will examine the people and nations that practice this fascinating religion.

Current Syllabi

CO1: Identify preconceived notions Americans have of Islam.

CO2: Compare and contrast the history, essential tenets, and central practices of Islam to Judaism and Christianity

CO3: Evaluate the impact Muhammad (PBUH) had on Islam and identify the Five Pillars of Islamic faith.

CO4: Evaluate what the Qur'an says about tolerance, People of the Book, women's roles, and morals.

CO5: Distinguish how the hadiths and Islamic Law differ and interpret different aspects of jihad in Islam.

CO6: Explain the split in Islam into the two major sects – Sunni and Shi’a – and its modern manifestations in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and elsewhere

CO7: Examine the current state of Islam and aspects of radical Islam.

CO8: Assess the relationship between Islam and the West.
