Affordability and the ability to really get inside the students’ heads. American Public University System President and CEO. Dr. Wallace E. “Wally” Boston and his team credit those qualities for the system’s spectacular rise to No. 1, handsdown, among troops using tuition assistance. University leaders set tuition at the TA cap and made a decision to never go above it.

They accepted the maximum appropriate credits for military training; designed degrees that played nicely with military jobs; said yes to suitable transfer credits from all accredited colleges as long as the grades were C or higher; were early adopters of the monthly semester start; and put in place sweeping accommodations for adult students, including a leave-of-absence policy that locks in their degree requirements.
