APUS Names Dr. Clay Wilson Cybersecurity Program Director

Charles Town, W. Va., March 11, 2014American Public University System (APUS) today announced the appointment of Dr. Clay Wilson as program director for cybersecurity. He previously served as director for the Cybersecurity Policy graduate program at University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and worked as a researcher at the Congressional Research Service, where he analyzed cyber- intelligence reports for the U.S. Congress and NATO committees.

The APUS Cybersecurity Program is designed to help students protect against abuse of computer technology and make policy decisions that guide successful technology use. It focuses on the issues, policies, practices, and perspectives of various agencies and disciplines, including information assurance, information systems security, national security priorities, intelligence and data collection, criminal justice, and emergency management. 

APUS offers master’s and bachelor’s degree programs in cybersecurity and a number of related certificate programs at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Students complete the new program with a multi-disciplinary group project in which they represent different sectors, agencies, and disciplines that must work together to protect against cyber-attacks, according to Dan Benjamin, dean of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

“Under Dr. Wilson’s leadership, we will continue to build a program that helps to develop strong leaders that understand the complex, interdisciplinary nature of cybersecurity in today’s world,” said Dr. Karan Powell, executive vice president and provost.

Dr. Wilson is a member of the Landau Network Centro Volta International Working Group, an organization that studies policy options to control proliferation of cyber weapons. He has moderated panels for the National Nuclear Security Administration in Como, Italy, and presented at the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association in Beijing. He has also presented at the US Defense Cyber Investigations Training Academy, at the US National Defense University, and at the Cyber Conflict Studies Association.

Dr. Wilson has designed cybersecurity academic and training programs for many organizations and also taught graduate courses for government and military officials in cyber security policy, information assurance, and risk analysis. In addition, he has conducted research and training for Abu Dhabi government officials on computer security and network technology for crisis management.  He earned a master’s in Technology Management from UMUC and a Ph.D. from the George Mason School of Public Policy, concentration in Protection of Intellectual Property.
