American Public University System to Inaugurate its Third, and First-Ever Woman, President
Former provost Dr. Karan Powell to be honored as part of week-long special events and address for university’s future.
Charles Town, WV, October 26, 2016 -- American Public University System (APUS) will inaugurate its third, and first-ever woman, president, Karan H. Powell, Ph.D., as part of a larger public celebration of the university’s honored and storied past and its evolving future. The invitation-only activities, which also include the debut of a faculty-student persistence round table, faculty Research Fest, graduate student competition and archives dedication, coincide with the appointment of new APUS provost Dr. Vernon Smith and are scheduled from Nov. 1-4 on the Charles Town campus.
Inauguration week brings exciting ways for the APUS community to have fun and get involved, with featured activities including:
- Student – Faculty Round Table: APUS is committed to supporting positive student learning outcomes. As an outgrowth of this core mission, two dozen students and faculty representing programs from across each of the university’s six schools will gather to collaboratively discuss key persistence and retention initiatives.
- Research Fest & Three-Minute Thesis: In the first university initiative of its kind, invited faculty will meet with their peers and Academics leadership to discuss a wide variety of hands-on topics, from research methodology and data analysis to project management and scholarship planning. In addition, the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition provides graduate students with a unique opportunity to take a master's degree capstone project and condense it into a virtual, three-minute judged presentation and bring their research to a global audience.
- Dedication of the University Archives: This distinctive event will feature an exhibit: APUS and Military Educators: History of the Influence on Security and Military Education, and will highlight the influences military education has had on the greater APUS community of friends, faculty, students, and staff and how that shaped the university’s current security and military programs.
- Inauguration Ceremony: APUS leadership, other visiting scholars and local community leaders will be in attendance, with remarks from immediate Past President Dr. Wallace E. Boston and inaugural speaker John Gardner, distinguished professor emeritus and president of the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education.
