Since our founding as American Military University in 1991, APUS has been recognized as a leader in distance education. We have received several prestigious industry awards and honors for academic quality, sustainability initiatives, and operational best practices. APUS named a “Best for Vets College” by Military Times
October, 2018 – APUS was named a “Best for Vets College” by Military Times, from whom it has received the distinction annually since 2015.
March 15, 2017 – APUS received a fifth Online Learning Consortium (OLC) Effective Practice Award. This year for “Applying a Group Coaching and Mentoring Framework to Shift an Organization Culture" – a university coaching and mentoring initiative designed to strengthen the principles and practices of teaching excellence. October 30, 2014 – APUS received an unprecedented fourth Online Learning Consortium (OLC) Effective Practice Award. This year for “Bringing the Library to Life: Live Librarian Instruction in a First-Year Online Course.” Read more.
August 2017 – For the second year in a row, the university was recognized as Top-Five Value Choice in the 2017 Washington Monthly College Rankings. Read more.
December 1, 2015 – Recognized for its potential to benefit university students, the APUS Mobile app was honored as an Educational App Award finalist in the Wharton-QS Stars Reimagine Education Awards.
November 5, 2013 – APUS has received the 2013 Creative Use of Technology Award from the Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) for its 21st Century New Millennia Textbook Engagement Project. Read more.
September 6, 2013 – AMU and APU's Legal Studies program has been inducted as the first and largest online university student chapter of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International. Read more.
June 6, 2013 – APUS Receives Environmental Excellence Award for Clean Energy from West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. Read more.

May 20, 2015 – APUS recognizes Byndr for innovation in online education with a $20,000 prize as part of 2015 Milken-Penn GSE Education Business Plan Competition. Read more.
May 15, 2014 – APUS announced that Philadelphia-based Osmosis has received the 2014 APUS Prize for Innovation in Online Education. Read more.

June 11, 2018 – Business, Security & Global Studies alumni named PMF finalists for class of 2018. Read more.
May 5, 2015 – Seven APUS graduate students and alumni were selected as 2015 Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) finalists from among more than 7,800 applicants. Read more.
January 10, 2012 – APUS’s School of Business was inducted as the Mu Zeta Chapter into the Delta Mu Delta International Business Honor Society, which recognizes superior scholastic achievements for graduate and undergraduate students studying business administration. Read more.

International Association of Emergency Managers Academic Recognition Award
March 7, 2011 – American Public University System (APUS) today announced several recognitions for its quality curriculum and faculty that will benefit students pursuing careers in the legal and emergency and disaster management fields. Read more.
September 23, 2010 – AMU has been honored by the National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA) with a 2010 NDTA Distinguished Service Award. Read more.
March 16, 2009 — Two AMU graduates were selected to The White House Fellows program that offers Fellows first-hand experience working at the highest levels of government to get a sense of personal involvement in the leadership of society. Read more.
April 23, 2009 – The Lieutenant General Richard G. Trefry Lifetime of Service Award was created in honor of APUS Trustee, Lieutenant General Richard G. Trefry (Ret.), the award can be presented to current or former members of the Army and Department of the Army Civilians who show a lifetime of extraordinary service to the Army. Read more.
