A Chicago native with decades of experience in higher education is set to take the helm at American Public University System next month. Karan Powell, a member of the APUS leadership team for 12 years who now serves as executive vice president and provost, will formally become APUS’s president on July 1.
Powell, an Ashburn, Va., resident who holds a doctorate in education from George Mason University, was selected for the role after what school officials describe as an extensive search.
Wally Boston, APUS’s president and CEO since 2004, will continue as CEO of the school’s parent company, American Public Education Inc.
